CC fails to agree on new AG

CC fails to agree on new AG Featured

The appointment of a successor to attorney general Yuvanjana Wanasundara Wijayatilake, who retired on January 09, still remains a problem for the government.

The president should recommend a person to the position, who will be appointed once the constitutional council approves the nominee.

The president has nominated the three seniormost officials in the AG’s department – Suhada Gamlath, Jayantha Jayasuriya and Kapila Waidyaratne.

The CC discussed the nominees in detail, and informed the president to send the most suitable person from among the trio.

It will meet again on Wednesday to announce the appointee.

Meanwhile, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila today told the media that Gamlath was not being appointed to the position as the government feared he would not go down on his knees before politicians.

‘Ravaya’ reports that justice minister Wijedasa Rajapakse is strongly backing solicitor general Gamlath to the position, although he could not be considered impartial, as he had been very close to the Rajapaksas during the previous regime, and held the justice secretary position.
