A four-point two-year pact between common Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena and UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and Ven Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera along with other political and civil groups was signed aimed at bringing about a drastic change in the governance of the country.

The basic requirement of the Agreement was the setting up of a national government with all political parties in the fray.

The four-points or pledges to be implemented immediately under the Agreement are as follows:

1: The abolishing of the Executive Presidency within 100 days and replaced by a Parliament answerable to the people.

2: Under Parliament the president will be a symbol of unity and vested with appropriate powers. Abolish the 18th amendment to the Constitution and the establishment of independent Public Sector, Judicial Services, Police and Elections Commissions thereby establishing the democratic process of governance.

3. All Communities and political aspirations to be represented in a new electoral system where Candidates with the highest votes polled will be the legitimate winner and people’s representative.

4.Salaries of Private and State employees to be increased while granting relief from the cost of living. Industrial, Agricultural, Plantation and Fisheries sectors along with small scale industries to be improved and developed for enhanced production. A fair price for local produce to be implemented. Help to be provided for neglected and downtrodden workers so as to improve their economic levels. Women, children, the differently-able, senior citizens and pensioners to be granted relief under a special system.
