The UNP working committee will meet on February 08 to approve Democratic Party leader, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka’s name to fill the party’s national list MP position that fell vacant following the death of lands minister M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena.

The meeting is pursuant to the MoU signed yesterday (03), under which Fonseka is to be given the position.

The final decision in that regard will be taken at the WC meeting, said UNP general secretary Kabir Hashim.

Thereafter, Fonseka will take oaths on February 09, while reports say the prime minister has agreed to grant him a cabinet position as well.

Internal disturbance

Fonseka’s entry has created some disturbance within UNP ranks, reports say.

Several party strongmen, including a powerful minister, are disturbed over it, with many opposing Fonseka’s being given privileges entitled to by an UNPer.

Describing it as a serious matter, a government spokesman said yet another political decision is likely within days.

Minister Harin Fernando has told the media that he was not agreeable to Fonseka’s joining the UNP, but that he would respect his party’s decision.

Also, appointing Fonseka, a defeated candidate at the general election, will amount to a belittling of the people’s supremacy, he said.
