UNP - DP inks collective agreement Featured

Sri Lanka’s ruling United National Party (UNP) today (03) signed a collective agreement with the Democratic Party (DP) led by former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka at Temple Trees in Colombo.

The agreement was signed by Fonseka as the leader of the Democratic Party and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the UNP leader.

The two leaders exchanged agreements for the Democratic Party to join the United National Front (UNF), the coalition led by the UNP.

Speaking to media afterwards, Fonseka said that he and the UNP shared the stage during two important political junctures – the presidential elections in 2010 and 2015 and that it will not be difficult for the UNF to continue forward under the leadership of Wickremesinghe.

Earlier, it was speculated that Fonseka was due to take oaths to fill in the parliamentary seat which fell vacant following the death of Lands Minister M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena.

However, UNP General Secretary - Kabir Hashim had stated today that the nomination for the vacant post will be decided at the party WC meeting on Feb. 08.
