Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' on the obstructions levelled from the SLFP, the Foreign minister says that the President's stance to introduce a democratic constitution should be appreciated and his speech in parliament on Jan 09 was politically important.
In comparison to past Presidents, President Maithripala's stance is very progressive, he added.
Mandate
However, SLFP MPs say that the government lacks the public mandate for a constitutional change.
To this, minister Samaraweera says that President SIrisena secured the public mandate on Jan. 08, 2015, not on August 17.
Speaking at a recent government parliamentary group meeting, the Foreign minister charged that groups who did not back that struggle, had later joined the government and is now hindering efforts to fulfil promises pledged by the President to the public back then.
SLFP on anti-Mangala mode?
After the minister denounced their criticisms at the meeting, certain SLFP MPs and ministers had convened at the party headquarters and discussed to boycott future government party meetings.
They have decided to inform the President of this beforehand.
