Those amendments will be introduced as per suggestions made by the SLFP, which have been agreed to by the prime minister.
The SLFP’s proposals are in response to the proposal tabled by the PM in parliament for a new constitution.
If that happens, the basic objectives including the abolition of the executive presidency, resolving the national issue and a new electoral system will not be fulfilled.
Those three objectives are included in the preface of the PM’s proposal.
Senior SLFPer Susil Premajayantha said their amendment proposals have been handed over to the secretary general of parliament.
Their suggestions say clause nine of the PM’s proposal that proposes a new constitution should be removed together with the preface.
Meanwhile, minister Mangala Samaraweera has denounced the SLFP’s approach with regard to a new constitution.
Certain persons in the SLFP, who did not contribute to the January 08 public mandate are now saying that the government has no mandate to formulate a new constitution, he said at the government parliamentary group at a meeting.
At the presidential election, Maithripala Sirisena received a clear mandate for a new constitution, he added.
