Suspicion over ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’ fund withdrawal Featured

Doubts have been raised over the sudden withdrawal of funds from the account of a healing home for differently abled war veterans, days after the Presidential election in 2015.

The ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’ is a special complex in Dehiwala, managed by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development of Sri Lanka and serves as the home for fifty soldiers of the Sri Lankan armed forces, who had become critically disabled during the war.

According to the ‘ Ravaya’ newspaper, 46 million rupees from the institution’s Bank of Ceylon account in Maharagama (Account No : 0072039363) has been withdrawn from a cheque (No : 754913) on Jan. 19, 2015.

At the present, the account balance stands at Rs. 800,000.

The 'Ravaya' newspaper further reports :

Those who are empowered to sign cheques of this accounts include Colonel I.G.R.P Bogodawatta, Colonel I.P.K. Kurugama and Major H.M.S.S. Bandara.

However, responding to a question on why the funds were obtained from the account, Colonel Bogodawatta has said that such a thing was not done.

Speaking, Military spokesman - Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera declined to comment citing the reason as the centre coming under the Defence ministry.

However, according to the website of ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’, all facilities have been provided by the Sri Lankan Army, a fact admitted by Colonel Bogodawatta.

Organisation structure

According to the organisation structure of the healing home, it is headed by the Defence secretary.

The Board of Management comprises of following personnel:

Chief of Staff – Sri Lanka Army(Chairman).
Additional Secretary nominated by MOD.
Adjutant General – Sri Lanka Army.
Quarter Master General – Sri Lanka Army.
Army Medical Advisor – Sri Lanka Army.
Director Rehabilitation – Sri Lanka Army.
Chief Accountant MOD.
Commandant MSM – Sri Lanka Army, as the executive officer of the establishment.
