He has told BBC Sandeshaya that since immediately after the incident, ASP Ruwan Gunasekara had been issuing statements to protect the killers, at a time when not even an independent investigation was thought about.

Gunasekara has said that in the past too, the IGP had appointed him to assist courts in cases pertaining to public unrest.

He has said the court could intervene if he had asked any inappropriate question while leading evidence.

The JVP leader has also said the minister in charge of the police had tabled a report in parliament that protected the police.

Attempts by BBC Sandeshaya to speak to subject minister Sagala Ratnayake for a comment had failed.
