At 9.00am today, a memorial service was held at Lasantha Wickrematunge's graveside.

In Jan 08, 2009, Lasantha was killed in broad daylight in a high security zone in Colombo while on his way to office and later succumbed to his injuries at the Kalubowila Hospital.

The murder was a 'severe blow' for media freedom of Sri Lanka and it was a well known secret that the assailants had passed several security barriers which were established in the area back then.

Jan. 08 also marks one year since the new 'Good Governance' government swept into power as President Maithripala Sirisena secured his historic mandate. However, those behind the murders of Lasantha and several others remain scot free to this day.
