Condom usage increased in last 20 yrs Featured

The usage of condoms has significantly increased in the last 20 years, Dr. Sisira Liyanage Director of the National STD/AIDS Control Programme says.
Noting that around 10 million condoms are used in a year in Sri Lanka, he says that the highest sales are reported from Colombo.

According to statistics, around 90% of prostitutes are in for the use of condoms. However, the figure is just 40% among homosexual males.

Dr. Liyanage says that many are using condoms for birth control, not to safeguard themselves from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD).

He said that from 1987 - 2015, 2300 AIDS patients have been identified in Sri Lanka with 357 cases being fatal.

He also said that around 40% - 50% of AIDS patients not coming for treatment at clinics poses a high risk.

He further urges public to use condoms in the instance of unsafe sex.
