Trade unions have objected to a call by port minister Arjuna Ranatunga to halt the overtime work by public servants.

Convener of the government, semi-government and private sector TUs collective, Saman Ratnapriya said OT has to be done as there are not enough workers in any of the state institutions.

Launching the action plan of his ministry for 2016, Ranatunga said yesterday (01) that all public servants should do justice to their salaries and commit themselves to achieve the government’s targets.

Ratnapriya said that before doing away with OT, filling vacancies and others steps should be taken first.

Their efficiency should be improved and they be paid a salary to commensurate with the cost of living, he added.
