Around 500 persons have attempted to obtain the National Identity Card (NIC) this year after producing forged birth certificates, Commissioner General of the Department of Registration of Persons - R.M.S. Sarath Kumara says.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', he said that such incidents had come to light when many GCE O/L candidates had applied for their NIC. There were cases where the birthdays and parents' names were changed, he added.

However, measures were taken to issue NICs for these exam candidates after obtaining a Probable Age Certificate, he further said.

The commissioner further said that legal redress will be sought against those who attempt to obtain NICs for illegal activities using forged birth certificates.
