Measures to minimise judicial delays

Measures to minimise judicial delays Featured

The ministry of Justice says that a special programme would be initiated in 2016 to minimise the court cases from being delayed.

As an initial step to minimise judicial delays, the Justice minister - Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe had proposed to amend the Mediation Board (Amendment) Act No 4 of 2011 to increase the said limit of monetary value to Rs. 500,000 to suit the present needs. This had received the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The limit of Rs. 25,000 adopted by the article 7 (a) of Mediation Board Act No 72 of 1988 for disputes on Mobile or Stable assets or loans, losses or requests that should be referred to the Mediation Board was amended as Rs. 250,000 by the Mediation Board (Amendment) Act No 4 of 2011.

Speaking, the minister said that Mediation Board had resolved 51% of the disputes tabled before them and this was a major contributing factor towards minimising judicial delays.

Noting there was also a large number of cases under to Motor Traffic laws, the minister said that a mechanism will be implemented to tackle such cases only through issuing spot fine tickets . A solution on this regard would be reached after discussions with the Department of Motor Traffic, he added.
