Models risk death to pose with stingrays

These incredible images show three brave bikini-clad models swimming just inches away from a group of 20 poisonous stingrays.

The pretty swimmers can be seen twisting and turning through the water near Moorea in the South Pacific.

A stingray’s spine has jagged edges and a sharp point, which can produce a fatal venom. Australian television personality Steve Irwin was killed after a stingray barb penetrated his chest while he was filming a documentary in 2006.

The stunning shots were taken by underwater photographer Christian Coulombe.
The 55-year-old said: 'Some of the models were worried about getting close to the stingrays.

'There can be three or four sticking to you at one time wanted to be fed some fish. Their contact is quite special, but can be frightening at first.

'You need to get used to them and be aware of the potential dangers. You really have to learn how to push them back gently

'The main two things to be aware of when up close to stingrays are to never step on them and not to let them give you a hickey, it's very painful.'

Stingray’s are carnivorous fish, which can grow up to six-and-a-half feet long and weigh up to 350lbs.

Mr Coulombe added: 'The stingrays in Moorea are the ideal subjects. There is a sort of symbiosis between the model and the animal in this beautiful setting.

'Stingrays are gracious and elegant creatures and they happily come into close contact with humans. The pictures show a real respect and love of nature.

'The project of putting girls in the ocean with wild animals was something I wanted to achieve since I started underwater photography.'
