The order, signed by President Maithripala Sirisena, was handed over to the Prisons by the Justice ministry on Dec. 16, it adds.

The move is made on a directive made by a special committee appointed by the government a few weeks ago, the newspaper says adding that this is the first time in 15 years that a general amnesty has been granted to death row inmates.
