Treasure hunters cause damage to Vatadage Featured

Treasure hunters have dug up the area in the vicinity of Vatadage in Medirigiriya causing damage to the historic site, police say after an inspection tour.

Yesterday (13), a team comprising Ven. Moragollagama Seevali Thera, police and archaeology department security personnel inspected the site.

The ancient stone pillars had been destroyed by using sledge-hammers, while people living nearby use the piles of stone to grind chillies and wash clothes.

People allege the 10 to 12 archaeology department security officers and civil defence force personnel deployed for security charge money from them when they go to Vatadage to hold Bodhi Pooja.

Therefore, people allege the destruction has been caused with their knowledge.
