A mechanism similar to the Parliament national list is to be introduced to appoint women to Local Government bodies, reports say.

According to this new proposal, 1/3 of the public representatives of LG bodies are to be women.

Political parties are to submit lists of their female candidates who will be appointed to the LG bodies according to the vote percentage secured by the respective party.

Speaking, Local Government and Provincial Councils - Minister Faizer Mustapha said that this measure is to be implemented according to a proposal submitted by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to increase the representation of women in LG bodies.
