94% women sexually harassed in public transport

94% women sexually harassed in public transport Featured

The Women and Media Collective (WMC) says that 94% of women are subjected to sexual harassment while travelling in public transport and it has become a widespread problem in Sri Lanka.

Travelling alone, falling asleep, crowding and not protesting against sexual advances are known to be some of the contributory factors leading to Gender Based Violence in public, they say.

An illustration by Sybil Wettasinghe for the #16days campaign portrays a common occurrence in public transportation with a twist, showing unusual reactions from the female victim and those around her.

This illustration was created in partnership with FOKUS Forum for women and development.

'Maybe responses such as these could lead to some form of prevention by the perpetrator in future,' the WMC says.
