Rs. 1,300 m loss in cancer drug purchases

Rs. 1,300 m loss in cancer drug purchases Featured

The state has suffered a loss of Rs. 1,300 million in the 12 months ended on May last year alone due to drugs being bought for the Maharagama Cancer Institute from the local market, without going through the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

An inquiry is underway into this scam, but the independence of the investigators has come into question, said a top official of the Health Ministry.

The committee of inquiry comprises members of the tender boards making purchases for the ministry.

Some of these officers have crossed the limit of their powers when taking decisions on certain purchases, while others have covered up irregularities in the purchases, charged the ministry official, ‘Divaina’ reports.
