Embassy officials have been permitted to meet the woman within the next few days to proceed with legal issues, he has told BBC Sandeshaya.
Two protests were held in Colombo yesterday demanding freedom for her, one in front of the UN office by several civil society organizations and the other near the Saudi embassy organized by ‘Sathhanda’ newspaper.
Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri said Saudi laws were not suited for the present society, adding that the government and the UN should mediate to prevent the woman from being stoned to death.
However, cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said not even the Saudi king could intervene in such a matter.
Thousands of signatures have been collected for an internet petition seeking freedom for the Lankan woman.
