The budget for 2016 allocates 12 per cent of total expenditure to ministries under president Maithripala Sirisena, which is Rs. 377 billion.

That sum is distributed as Rs. 306 b to defence, Rs. 69 b to Mahawel development and environment and Rs. 2.3 b to the special spending unit.

However, when he was president, Mahinda Rajapaks controlled 62 pc, or Rs. 1,652 b, of the budget for 2015.

That sum was distributed as Rs. 283 b for defence and urban development, Rs. 1,160 b for finance and planning, Rs. 144 b for highways, ports and shipping, Rs. 53 b for law and order and Rs. 10 b for the special spending unit.
