‘Another public-misleading govt. remark’

‘Another public-misleading govt. remark’ Featured

The government claim that the prevention of terrorism act is being amended in accordance with international laws is a statement that misleads the public, says former permanent representative at the UN Dr. Dayan Jayatilake.

Although there are certain international regulations pertaining to terrorism prevention, a country should deal with a terrorism prevention act as per provisions of the constitution of that country, he notes.

He is commenting on a remark made by justice minister Wijedasa Rajapakse at a media briefing on November 26.

Rajapakse said the PTA would be annulled once a new act is adopted as per international conventions, adding that the international community is of the view that the PTA was not compatible with international conventions.

The government is doing that while taking full responsibility with regard to national security, he said.
