The budget proposes to reserve Rs. Rs. 1000 to the Transport ministry to develop public transport in selected cities of Ja-Ela, Awissawella, Panadura, Kadawatha and Piliyandala in a bid to manage enable better traffic management within the city of Colombo.
According to the proposal, vehicles coming to the city will be required to carry a minimum of 4 passengers and a fee will be imposed on any vehicle that does not do so.
This mechanism will be implemented before the end of September 2016, the finance minister said.
Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', a highly placed official working at a government office in Colombo said that in the future, he would probably have to park his vehicle and wait on his way to office, until 03 others get in as his wife's office and children's schools are not located within the city.
He added that the Finance minister has become a 'jester' before public after coming up with such proposals.
