Law student seeks Rs. 100m compensation for loss of arm Featured

A law student has sought a Rs. 100 million compensation from the Sri Lankan government and health authorities for losing her arm while being treated at the Matara Hospital.

Colombo District judge - T.I.D. Gunesekara has re-fixed the trial on Nov. 02 the litigation filed by Ms. Priyadarshani.

The case has cited Matara General Hospital Director - Dilka Saranasinghe, Colombo National Hospital Director - Anil Jasinghe, Health Services Director General - Palitha Gunaratne Mahipala, Health ministry secretary - Sudharma Karunaratne and the Attorney General as defendants.

Achala Priyadarshani, who was a final year law student in 2013, lost her arm due to the treatment she has received from the Matara General Hospital following an accidental fall from a flight of stairs at her home.

The left-handed student has fractured her left arm during the fall and the doctors at the Matara General Hospital have placed a cast. The student has complained the cast was too tight and causing pain but the cast had not been removed and instead she has been given a pain killer.

As her condition worsened she had been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital where doctors were forced to amputate her left arm as the nerves had become necrotic.
