Speaking at a media briefing recently, Mr. Rajapaksa said, "The daily income of 43% of our population is below US$2. However, 38% of the country's income is being enjoyed by the rich which is around 10% of the population."
"Also, 21.6% of the Sri Lankan children are suffering from malnutrition. However, the government spends Rs. 60 billion each year to import food that can be grown locally."
He said that these were the results of an unsuccessful economic policy in the country.
Mr. Rajapaksa also said that they hoped that the farming, fishing, labour sectors and women hope that the upcoming budget will provide relief.
