Under the initiative, details of 48,000 graves will be added to the database and this will allow public to find details of the deceased's relatives, Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council - Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said.

At the present, 2' by 2' plots of the cemetery are sold to relations to lay the deceased's remains at rest and the above initiative also aims to prevent an organised racket engaged in selling plots for bogus deeds.

Such an update of data is being done for the first time since 1967, Dr. Wijayamuni said adding that the Borella Cemetery is to be upgraded to the status of a national cemetery.
