Death penalty pushed back by 2 years Featured

Although the death penalty was imposed, the measure cannot be implemented until two years have passed, minister of Justice - WIjayadasa Rajapakshe says.

He was speaking to media yesterday (03) after a special meeting with judges and lawyers at Jaffna District Court Complex.

Sri Lanka will not implement the death penalty immediately as the country has decided to vote in favor of a UN resolution for moratorium on death penalty in 2015, the minister added.

Special court for LTTE cases
The minister also said that they intend to set up a special courthouse to take up cases of LTTE suspects.

"There are three types of detainees. The convicted, thoses who face legal redress and those who are facing investigations. However, the Attorney General's Department’s special team is considering the release of some of the Tamil detainees, where there are no serious charges, no credible evidence," the minister added.

The government intends to see finish hearing these cases as soon as possible, the minister further said.
