The Agricultural Ministry has sealed a fertilizer storage facility belonging to CIC fertilizer company after finding that fertilizer, stored there in breach of proper standards, has a very high content of the kidney disease causing cadmium.

One kilo of fertilizer should contain less than 5 mg, but the fertilizer stored there had more than 20 mg per kilo.

Agriculture minister present at raid

Agriculture ministry officials, led by minister Duminda Dissanayake were present at the raid of the fertilizer storage facility yesterday (24).

Dissanayake said investigations confirmed a very high content of cadmium in the fertilizer, imported in June in breach of regulations of the Sri Lanka Standard Institution.
