Split likely in govt. over Maxwell report

Split likely in govt. over Maxwell report Featured

A presidential commission report into disappearances due to be tabled in parliament soon is likely to create a split in the government.

That is because the report has leveled accusations against senior SLFP politicians, say political sources, adding that this has led to a delay in the release of the report.

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the commission, headed by retired high court judge Maxwell Parakrama Paranagama, to investigate disappearances in the north and the east between 10 June 1990 and 19 May 2009.

Its other members are retired directress general of the census department D.B. Priyanthi Suranjana Vidyaratne, former deputy legal draftsman Mano Ramanathan and retired adminsitrative officer Hewa Wasalage Gunadasa, as the secretary.

PM under pressure

UNP MPs have demanded the prime minister to ask the president to release the report without delay and punish the guilty for the disappearances irrespective of position.

However, SLFP ministers want the president not to release the report, saying it will cause damage to the party.
