The CID has reportedly decided to obtain a statement from former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in connection with the abduction and forced disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.

The questioning will take place soon after he returns from an overseas visit, say police sources.

The investigation is in its final stage, with several more senior Army officers remain to be arrested, according to the sources.

Eleven suspects, including two colonels, are presently under detention in connection with the incident.

Top officials of the Army intelligence had abducted Ekneligoda with the intention of killing him, investigations point out.

CID under pressure

The CID is under pressure from various quarters over this probe.

However, president Maithripala Sirisena has ordered that an impartial investigation be carried out and those responsible arrested irrespective of positions.

‘Sathhanda’ reports today (18) the journalist had been handed over by Army intelligence men to an Army camp at Sorivila (Manampitiya) in Welikanda, and that he had been murdered and the body dumped into the sea in Trincomalee.
