UNP-SLFP disagree on LG polls

UNP-SLFP disagree on LG polls Featured

The two main political parties are in disagreement over the date of the next Local Government election and the manner of holding it, political sources say.

The government Gazette containing the delimitation of local government bodies was issued recently.

The SLFP firmly states that this election should be held according to a new electoral system. However, the majority of the UNP maintains that the elections should be held under the Proportional Representation (PR) system.

The above sources add that the President is to declare the election on an unexpected date before March.

It is also said that the majority of the SLFP are of the opinion that the party should contest alone at the LG polls and that the President should actively lead the election campaign.

Meanwhile, the 'Lanka C News' website of Wimal Weerawansa states that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to hand over the reigns of the election campaign to President Maithripala and stand back.
