Govt. teachers holding tuition classes, illegal?

Educationalist and legal expert Samarasinghe Gunasekara says that it is illegal for teachers of government schools to hold tuition classes.

It is also an act that breaches ethics of the profession, he said adding that legal redress could be sought against such teachers.

Legal experts and school teachers speaking on this regard say that as teachers of government schools are paid by the government, it is illegal for them to indulge in business activities, in accordance with regulations of the Public Service Commission.

Meanwhile, It has been revealed that syllabuses in schools are not covered as some teachers are even resorting to hold tuition classes during school times.

Also, it is learnt that students are facing hardships at school with certain teachers holding such classes within the school premises itself, pushing students to join classes and discriminating any student who does not attend them.

Speaking on this regard, Joseph Stalin of the Ceylon Teachers Union has said that such incidents are being reported.

Although teachers face no obstruction in conducting private tuition classes, it is a violation of ethics in the Teaching profession, Stalin added.
