Mobitel comes under Sri Lanka Telecom, whose majority shareholder is the government.
The FCID has already gathered evidence which show that Rubasinghe had abused his office to commit financial irregularities for Rajapaksa’s electioneering.
At the last presidential election, he had given Mobitel’s trucks for the UPFA candidate, spending Rs. 2.5 million for that, and stationed Mobitel employees at an unlawful office run together with the TRC at Narahenpita to change results of the election.
Also Mobitel had printed a propaganda calendar titled ‘Pubudamu Hetak’ at an expense of Rs. 15 million, given Mobitel’s billboards to the Rajapaksas, handed over Mobitel’s propaganda and printing work to Kumar Stickers without calling for tenders, given advertisements to CSN outside procedures, and sponsored the Carlton preschool and Carlton rugby tournaments.
There is also an accusation that 60 million dollars of Mobitel were misused by making a bid of 132 million dollars for Hutch Telecom, which was to be sold for 70 million dollars.
Political cronyism prevented investigations against Rubasinghe during the Rajapaksa rule and also during the 100 day government, but reliable sources say the law will be strictly enforced against him now.
