He says that the figure includes 199 children. 25 of these children were pedestrians, he added.
He was speaking at a media briefing held to coincide with the World Children's Day on Oct. 01 and the National Child Protection Week which will be held from Sep. 28 to Oct. 04.
Out of the number of children hospitalised due to accidents occurring from the year 2012 onwards, 23,800 have been hospitalised due to dog bites, while 22,000 were hospitalised due to broken limbs.
10,000 cases of poisoning, 19,000 cases of waste obstruction as well as 6600 cases of burns and snakebites were reported, he added.
"A Sri Lankan child dies every 15 minutes due to accidents. A child is hospitalised every two minutes due to accidents."
"The figure stands at 200,000. However, it could be higher when considering numbers seeking treatment from hospital OPDs. Around Rs. 1107 million are spent for treatment. However, 99% of these accidents are preventable," he further said.
