Named the Centre for Sex Workers’ Rights, it has had preliminary discussions with sex workers in the country, said its media convener, lawyer Daskon.
There is information that Sri Lanka presently has more than 60,000 sex workers, said SP of police Ajith Rohana at a media briefing, adding that 63,000 police officers have been given training to promote the use of condoms among sex workers to prevent the spread of HIV virus.
This indicates the government, even unofficially, admitted the existence of sex workers in the country.
Daskon said their organization would represent interests of sex workers, who are faced with very complex problems in society.
Its organizer is lawyer Senaka Perera and the consultant is lawyer Lakshan Dias.
