Petition by Ekneligoda case suspects’ wives allowed Featured

Taking up a writ petition filed by the wives of four Army personnel, including two lieutenant colonels, who are under arrest by the CID in connection with the forced disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, the court of appeal today (23) ordered the director of the CID and other respondents to appear before courts on October 09.

A panel comprising judges Vijith Malalgoda and H.C.J. Madawala took up the petition filed by T. Sudarshani, P. Nadeeka, P. Niyomi and M. Kumararatne.

The respondents cited aare CID director Sudath Nagahamulla, OIC J.V. Niroshan Silva, ASP S. Abeysekara, the defence secretary, the IGP and the attorney general.

Lt. Col. T.T.D. Pramod Siriwardena, Lt. Col. S.A. Kumararatne, Staff Sergeant R.M. Priyantha Kumara and Corporal Anura Jayalath were arrested by the CID on August 24 and are being detained from August 27 to September 10 under the PTA.

The petitioners challenge their detention, and seek an order that their fundamental rights have been violated.

Staff Sergeant Rajapaksa, retired Sergeant Major Ranabandara, Sergeant Major Upasena, retired Corporal Ranjith Rupasena, Corporal Anurajeewa and two ex-LTTE intelligence members Thavendran and Satya Master are also under CID arrest in connection with the forced disapearance of Ekneligoda.
