Farmers in the Marassana area, Kandy are in turmoil after their cabbage plantations spanning through over 12 acres, failed to produce crop.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' on this regard, assistant Agriculture Director of Kandy - Mr. Senaratne said that over 26 families in the Marassana area have sowed these seeds. However, the plants had rot after failing to produce cabbages.

He said that the rotting had occurred due to a bacteria and that the seeds were given to the farmers by a private company.

He added that these seeds were not approved by the government as well.

Samples have been sent for further testing, he added.

Upon being urged by the farmers, the Patha Hewaheta Divisional Secretary has alerted the District level agriculture officers on this situation.

Kandy District Secretary - H.M.P. Hitisekara has said that the inquiries will be made over this company and measures will be taken to provide relief to the afflicted farmers.

Also, agriculture officials have been instructed to create awareness among farmers to use only seeds that are registered by state authorities.
