New media tax : more details soon

Reports cite that the government is to impose a revamped tax mechanism on media.

According to reports, the government is said to be planning to increase tax on paper used in print media. In addition a new taxation method will be introduced with regard to advertising done on electronic and print media, reports add.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', Media minister - Gayatha Karunatillake said that this issue can be raised during this afternoon's (18) meeting between the President, the Prime minister and media heads.

However, reports add that this is a part of the government's plan to increase state revenue without burdening the public with taxes.

Spending twice as the expected expense when acquiring paddy during the 'Yala' season is said that the nearest reason for this.

If these taxes are imposed, the price of paper would increase considerably.

It is said that the ministry of Finance will take swift measures to issue the gazette notification on this regard.
