Third term issue: made judiciary process, a laughing stock

Third term issue: made judiciary process, a laughing stock Featured

The entire process of President Rajapaksa seeking the Supreme Court opinion on his eligibility to contest for a record third term and the SC's decision stating that there were no legal impediments to prevent Rajapaksa from doing so surpassed the legal and judicial traditions of the country, former Chief Justice - Sarath N. Silva says.

Speaking on this regard to BBC Sandeshaya, he has said that this has also made the entire judiciary process a laughing stock.

Meanwhile, Leader of the House - Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament on Tuesday that the SC had “unanimously held that there was no legal impediment” for the President to contest a third term.

The SC has been of the opinion that the President is empowered to announce snap polls soon after he completes four years of his second term in office.

Speaking further, Sarath N. Silva  has added, 'I think this must be the first time in the legal history of Sri Lanka that a SC opinion is declared in Parliament.'

Even though this opinion is not a 'SC ruling', it has obstructed the opportunity to seek legal action, he has said, adding that the matter would be raised at a 'people's court'.

He further added that he had no faith in taking up such a issue before the international community.
