The president was delivering the government’s policy statement at the inaugural session of the 08th parliament today (01).

He also said a national government would promote reconciliation and economic growth.

Parliament will have the responsibility of deciding as to whether the post of executive presidency is needed any longer and if yes, what should be the responsibilities of this position.

"My government will continue to crackdown on corruption and punish those who exploit national resources no matter who they are and there will be no political interference in the appointment of officials", he said.

President Sirisena also said that policies of good governance for a sustainable future will be implemented in parallel with manifestos of other political parties.

Parliament was adjourned until 9.30 am on September 03.
