Environmentalist Ravindra Kariyawasam states that the level of arsenic, cadmium, and mercury in the water collected near Ambathale Water Treatment Plant is such that it has made the water toxic to level of it being unsuitable for human consumption.
He stated that following a test conducted on 38 samples using international standards the status of water quality was identified.
According to Kariyawasam the arsenic percentage in water is 4 , whereas drinking water should only contain less than 0.04% of arsenic.
He further stated that despite the relevant information being presented to the Central Environmental Authority they have paid no attention to it and has taken no measure to investigate the situation.
