Opposition leader appointment not by president – Wimal

Opposition leader appointment not by president – Wimal Featured

The SLFP and other MPs who will sit in the opposition should choose the opposition leader with majority consent, NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa has told BBC Sandeshaya.

The NFF, contesting the parliamentary polls under the UPFA, won five seats.

Weerawansa charged president Maithripala Sirisena was acting in a dictatorial manner when dealing with affairs of the opposition.

It is ridiculous the president appoints the prime minister, the cabinet, the opposition leader and the chief opposition whip, he said, adding the country’s multiparty democracy was being destroyed.

It is not enough for the SLFP MPs to sit in the opposition, but they should also be allowed to act as a true opposition, Weerawansa said.

TNA to lead opposition

When pointed out the JVP’s argument the TNA, with 16 seats, should be given the opposition leader position, he said such remarks to appease NGOs should be investigated.

He was also asked as to whether there was a difference of ideology, as ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa has agreed to sit with a SLFP agreeable for a national government, while the NFF has decided to sit in the opposition.

There was no such division, and Rajapaksa and several other SLFP MPs will function in the opposition, he responded.
