Cabinet’s swearing in likely to be put off! Featured

The swearing in of the ministers of the new government scheduled for September 02 will be put off until September 04, say reliable sources.

A proposal to decide on the number of cabinet members will be submitted to parliament for approval on September 03, political sources say.

Acting general secretary of the SLFP Duminda Dissanayake told the media in Colombo today (27) that ministers would not take oaths on September 02, the day on which the SLFP marks its 64th anniversary.

Several celebratory functions have been organized in Polonnaruwa under the auspices of president Maithripala Sirisena, which will clash with the swearing in if that take place on that day, he said.

The president will discuss with the prime minister and take a final decision, he said.

However, UNP chairman Malik Samarawickrama said in a statement yesterday that the new cabinet would take oaths on September 02.
