Should it happen, it would be a singular milestone in the political history of Sri Lanka.
The President is vested with the complete powers to appoint a Prime minister.
Earlier, the President had proposed senior Sri Lanka Freedom Party members such as W.D.J. Seneviratne, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Chamal Rajapaksa, Susil Premajayantha, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Athauda Seneviratne and A.H.M. Fowzie as suitable candidates for the post of Prime minister.
However, all except A.H.M. Fowzie had signed a letter addressed to the President, declining the post and calling that Mahinda Rajapaksa should be made Prime minister. The letter in Sinhala, is shown below.
Fowzie not signing the letter has now sparked controversy within political circles.
Speaking to 'Neth FM' radio station on this regard, Mr. Fowzie said that he wholeheartedly agrees to the decisions taken by President Maithripala Sirisena, who is also the Chairman of the SLFP and the UPFA.
