The murders were committed in a paddy field in the area.

Medirigiriya police say that the murders are a result of a dispute between two groups over irrigation for agriculture.

The victims have been identified as a one J.A. Shantha Peiris (46) and a one D.M. Samatha Kumara (31).

Mr. Peiris, a resident of the Pathokwewa area, is a father of three while Mr. Kumara is a bachelor from the Jayagampura area.

A 62-year old in the Medirigiriya area has been arrested over the murders and police say that weapons used for the murders have also been found.

However, relatives of the victims say that the police are yet to arrest 04 more suspects who have fled the area.
