‘No legal hurdle against quizzing Mahinda’

There is no legal hurdle to question or file a criminal case against a former president, says legal expert Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne.

State-run Dinamina and Daily News have reported that ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa is likely to be questioned by the police special investigating unit over the misuse of funds of the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA).

Wickramaratne has told BBC Sandeshaya that presidential immunity applied for a serving president only.

Meanwhile, ex-minister Dinesh Gunawardena said this was only a baseless mud-slinging against a rival party leader as an election was about to be held.

He said this witch-hunt was a clear violation of election laws, warning against anti-democratic acts targeting Rajapaksa or any other UPFA candidate.
