Ex-president, UPFA candidate for Kurunegala Mahinda Rajapaksa is likely to be questioned by the police special invstigating unit over the misuse of funds of the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA), state-run Dinamina reports.

RADA, whose chairman was former MP Tiran Alles, had come under Rajapaksa during his rule.

Its former chief operations officer Dr. Saliya Wickramasuriya was arrested over a Rs. 169 million fraud and released on bail.

The finance and administrative director too, had been arrested.

As investigations were underway, Alles filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court to prevent his arrest.

Investigations have revealed that the treasury had released, on Rajapaksa’s orders, Rs. 1,959 million to RADA to provide relief for the 2004 tsunami affected people.

During the period it was in operation, RADA had spent a total of Rs. 2,431 million.

Investigations cannot proceed without questioning Rajapaksa, the newspaper adds.
