Ranil’s 5-point plan for election

Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told the UNP convention in Colombo yesterday (11) that a new constitution would be adopted with the support of other parties after the general election.

This constitution would pave the way for the devolution of powers within a unitary country, he said adding that the executive powers would be abolished while safeguarding the authority of incumbent Maithripala sirisena.

He went onto say that the UNP had decided to contest the election on its own, but an alliance was formed to counter the challenge of attempts by the Rajapaksas to raise their heads.

Although the UNP and the other parties will contest as an alliance, each one of them will have the ability to function independently in parliament, he said.

Instead of a policy manifesto for the upcoming polls, a five-point plan will be introduced, under which 48 economic zones will be formed, said the premier.

Under a new government by him, he said the factory of a leading international vehicle manufacturer would be opened in Kurunegala.
