Low cigarette prices have made schoolchildren and low-income groups getting addicted to smoking easily, says chairman of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol, Dr. Palitha Abeykoon.

If Sri Lanka’s per capita income is considered, the price of a cigarette should be at least Rs. 45, he says.

Dr. Abeykoon says all countries are using the method increasing prices to control smoking.

Therefore, the government should raise cigarette prices from the next budget, he says.
