A national level campaign is underway to pressurize parties to adhere to this declaration to raise public awareness and to collect one million signatures in support of the declaration.
However, one applicant interviewed by the SLFP to be its candidate was Saruwa Liyanage Sunil, former chairman of Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha, who stands accused of having raped a 14 year old girl between May 23 and May 30, 2012.
Arrested on July 04, he was released on bail two months and 10 days later.
Another applicant is Ananda Sarath Kumara, former north western provincial councilor, who was given a seven year suspended prison term for having forced a school teacher in Nawagattegama to kneel down.
Given above are just two examples.
Voters should keep a close watch as to whether parties violate the declaration they have signed and give nominations to the corrupt, criminals, rapists etc.
